Cooking UI

Cooking is a skill that allows raw ingredients be cooked into edible food. Players can add up to 5 ingredients into the pot by interacting with them in ingredients window on the right and then using heat to cook them.

Food has a chance to burn, depending on the player's effective cooking level, resulting in either burnt food or burnt fish depending on the type of ingredients used. Effective cooking level and the amount of ingredients used also effects the level of food produced, which directly affects the amount of buff stacks the food will have. By leveling cooking, the player is able to cook better foods that give increased healing and better buffs.

Uses

  • Recover health by eating food out of combat
  • Food can be placed in the combat inventory to recover health during combat.
    - Combat buffs are only applied when food is eaten during combat.
  • Can be used to obtain various buffs that help in other skills such as foraging, mining, etc.
  • Cooking fish has a chance to produce fish oil which can be used in the crafting skill to create pyre logs.

Fish Oil Chance

Fish Chance*
Raw Shrimp 5%
Raw Anchovy 5%
Raw Trout 10%
Raw Salmon 10%
Raw Lobster 15%
Raw Tuna 15%
Raw Shark 20%

*This is per fish used. For example, cooking with 1 Raw Shark and 1 Raw Tuna results in a 35% chance, while cooking with 5 Raw Sharks will result in a 100% chance to receive fish oil.

Determining Produced Food

Ingredients

The first part to understanding how the game determines the resulting food produced is to understand the ingredients. Each ingredient has "Categories" or "Tags", size, heat, exp, buff.

Tags

Denotes which category or categories they belong to.

  • Some ingredients can have multiple tags. (e.g. an apple is both a fruit and a sweetener)
  • The value of a tag is always equal to the size of the ingredient.
  • There are 13 tags in total:
    • Fruit
    • Vegetable
    • Grain
    • Dairy
    • Eggs
    • Meat
    • Beast
    • Poultry
    • Fish
    • Monster
    • Spice
    • Sweetener
    • Preservative

Size

Used to calculate difficulty and tag value. This affects everything from bonuses to how long it takes to cook the dish.

XP

The amount of experience gained per ingredient when cooked.

Heat

The amount of heat used per ingredient when cooked.

Buff

Some ingredients will apply buffs to dishes when they’re used. If more than 1 unique buff ingredient is used, it will always result in questionable food. Buffs are also always applied at level 2, and cannot be increased or decreased. This stacks with existing enchants from sources such as armor, e.g. if the player has 3 gathering scrolls on their ring, eating a dish with gathering 2 will have the effect of gathering 5.

Recipes

Recipes are pre-determined dishes that require certain ingredients to create, each having their own unique properties. These are stored in an in-game database that it compares chosen ingredients to in order to determine which recipe will be the result. Each recipe has these properties:

ID

The order in the recipe list within the game’s code. This is important when selecting recipes that fit the chosen ingredients.

HP

The base value that this dish will heal, without considering ingredients or bonuses.

Value

How much gold a dish can be vendored for.

Ingredient Tags

What ingredient types are required to cook the dish, e.g. the Birdie Pasta recipe has the poultry and grain tags, meaning a raw chicken and rice would create this recipe.

Resulting Dish

The resulting dish has a few parts, its recipe, bonus/quality, hp, buff, and stacks.

Recipe

the determine the chosen recipe the game will check each recipe in the the database if its viable or not. To check if the recipe is viable or not the game will first add the value(weight of ingredient) of each tag of the ingredients that is used by the recipe and value of each tag of the ingredient that is not used by the recipe. If the total value of tags used by the recipe is greater or equal to the total value of tags not used by the recipe, then the recipe is valid.

For example, consider the following ingredients: 2 x raw beef, 2 x ashes, 1 x potato, and the recipe: Beast Curry, which ingredients are beast, grain, and spice

The total tags of each ingredient is:

6 x grain (3 each from the ashes)

4 x meat (2 each from the raw beef)

4 x beast (2 each from the raw beef)

2 x vegetable (2 from the potato)

From this we can see the total tags used by the recipe is 14(from grain, meat and beast) and total tags not used by the recipe is 2(from vegetable). Since the number of tags used is bigger than the number of tags not used, this recipe is valid.

If there are multiple recipes valid, the game will choose the first one based on the ID.

Bonus/Quality

Bonus is the little number on the top right of dishes, which affects the final hp and stacks of dishes.

The bonus is determined by 2 factors:

The first factor is the effective cooking level of the cook. This modifier's formula is:

The second factor is determined by the lowest used tag in the recipe.

Using the previous example with the ingredients: 2 x raw beef, 2 x ashes, 1 x potato, and the recipe: Beast Curry, which ingredients are beast, grain, and spice

In this case, since the vegetable tag isn't asked for, the minimum tag for this recipe will be 4 from Beast or meat.

So if this recipe is cooked using effective level 30 the resulting quality will be +4

HP

The amount of HP recovered when the dish is consumed, can be easily determined using the formula

Buff

The buff of the food is determined by the buff of the ingredients used. However, if more than 1 type of buff is used as an ingredient , the resulting food will always be Questionable Food with the buff of the first buff ingredient put in the pot.

Stacks

The number of stacks of the buff that will be applied when the dish is consumed can be determined by using the formula:

Buffs

Cooking and eating food created with a few specific ingredients (see below) can give various buffs, similar to those from enchantments. The amount of buffstacks given by the food is determined by the quality of the food and players effective cooking level (base cooking level + additional modifiers such as an augmented ladle), players can hover over the cooking skill icon to see their effective level.

Identical food buffs and enchantments will stack. For example, if a player has an active 30% Inferno buff from a scroll of inferno, and a 10% inferno buff from food, they will have a total of 40%.

Food can be eaten any time out of combat to recover health, food added to the combat inventory may be used during combat. Combat buffs will only be applied if the food is eaten during combat. Combat buffs will not be kept upon exiting combat, while skill-based buffs gained from eating food in combat will be kept until used once out of combat. Non-combat buff stacks are consumed by performing an action out of combat, regardless of the type of skill being trained. I.E inferno stacks will be used even when not smithing
